I like painting people who know they're being watched and who choose to engage in that dynamic. Two women share a silent understanding and connection, sharing their experience of the gaze. This is one of those strange, silent moments that shift in our memory as implied by the dream-like backdrop. Their relationship is ambiguous, their control of the gaze is implied. I don't want to paint passive subjects but players in a nuanced relational game we all participate in.
