Clowning

'Clowning' acrylic on canvas 60x84cm.

Sometimes I use projectors in my work- the extra layer imposes a narrative and distorts the space we are working in. The texture created by fractured, fragmenting light does something to the flesh that I find interesting. In this case the shadows and shapes are a section of Bosch's Garden of earthly delights and they fell on the subject in such a way that it reminded me of clown makeup, something which felt particularly apt considering her background in circus and performance. Her stance and state of dress felt open and vulnerable but the faces created by the light of the projector felt like a protective cloak.
