Hypnogogia

‘Hypnogogia’ acrylic on board, 69x84cm. I wanted to do a rif on Fuseli’s Nightmare painting. In this version the protagonist is trapped in half sleep. Her demons aren’t nightmarish, they drift with her between deep dreams and consciousness. Perhaps this is a lucid dream. Gravityless and false. Deliberate inaccuracies in the painting are further proof that this is an imagined reality. The broken elephant is a recurring theme in my work. He’s supposed to be good luck, a guardian but in this case he’s ineffective, maybe even bad luck or a sign of uncertain fate.
