shift
'Shift' acrylic on canvas, 59x83cm.
Shift, painting of Dan- this image is, for me, about brief fleeting affectionate moments that live in your memory but not that of the person we shared it with originally. A moment of warmth or lust that is all about gaze and that passes without the subject of our gaze being aware. I find it compelling when the subject of a painting looks out at us but sometimes I want to honour the the act of noticing or simply feeling drawn in and allowing the viewer to join you in that experience. Perhaps this is more about quiet adoration. I wanted there to be an element of lust but from a distance, not from a devouring onlooker, but an admiring one. It’s a combination of two images, implying movement and transience. Flickering in time. Dan is a close friend I met at art school. A very talented, multidisciplinary artist and beautiful friend. We were taking photos in front of a fuzzy, clunky projector and this memory is in the past, possibly a little idealised.
