‘Self’
graphite on paper, 59x83cm, framed. This is the larger and more explicitof two self portraits I made last year. Self portraiture is a well-trodden tradition in figurative art and inhabiting the role of subject is an interesting, if uncomfortable excercise. I’m trying to convey a mixture of moments sensations and feelingsbut in this instanceI think those elements collide to make something more distorted and and twisted- perhaps this is more of a rumination on paper. I want it to feel exposed, naked and honest and to involve a more protective pose. Hands and feet reach out of the image and express a curiosity and need for connection or touch.
